【題目】A supermarket checkout operator was praised for striking a blow for modern manners and a return to the age of politeness after refusing to serve a shopper who was talking on her mobile phone.

The supermarket manager was forced to apologize to the customer who complained she was told her goods would not be scanned unless she hung up her phone. Jo Clark, 46, said, “I don't know what she was playing at. I couldn’t believe how rude she was. When did she have the right to give me a lecture on checkout manners? I won’t be shopping there again!”

But users of social media sites and Internet forums(論壇) were very angry that store gave in and the public appeared to be supporting the angry checkout worker. “Perhaps this is a turning point for mobile phone users everywhere. When chatting, keep your eyes on people around you. That includes people trying to serve you, other road users and especially people behind you in the stairs,” said a typical post.

“It’s time checkout staff fought back against these people constantly chatting on their phones. They can drive anyone crazy. It’s rude and annoying. I often want to grab someone’s phone and throw it as far as I can, even though I am not a checkout girl, just a passer-by,” said another.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of parenting site www. Netmums.com said, “While this checkout operator doesn’t have the authority to order customers to switch off their phones, you can see clearly how frustrated and angry she felt. No matter how busy you are, life is nicer when you and those around you have good manners.”

At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. 【1】 Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during the anxious moments.

2 A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse. 3 When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge these thoughts by asking yourself positive questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

Be smart in how you deal with fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that makes you anxious, break the task into small ones. 4

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what you worry about never comes true. 5 Then you should leave everything else in the hands of God.

How to Help Save the Environment

Cleaning up the existing damage to our environment and preventing further destruction is a huge job. It can seem that there is no way one person, especially a young person like you, can make a difference. 【1】 , starting with changing some simple everyday habits and working with others to spread the importance of protecting the environment. Here are a few suggestions.

Avoid unnecessary driving (or being driven). Every teenager looks forward to a driver’s license and a first car, but automobiles are one of the primary causes of air pollution. If it’s too far to pedal a bike, take a bus or share your car ride with someone else. 2 , but it undoubtedly benefits the environment more.

Unplug electrical equipment when possible. Even when turned off, some appliances may still use power. 3 . So it is best to unplug anything that you do not expect to use in the next 36 hours (or more).

Carry a bag and a reusable water bottle. 4 . On the contrary, plastic bags and disposable bottles may bring convenience to you, but the environmental damage caused by them is almost permanent. Every plastic bottle not made and plastic bag not used helps a little bit.

Raise awareness. Talk to family and friends about simple changes they can make, and why they should do so to help protect the environment. 5 . It’s acceptable to just show them that you have thought a lot about the subject, are passionate about making a difference, and really could use their support.

A. But you can make your contribution

C. It might not seem as cool as driving yourself

【題目】The associates I hired in my bicycle and lawn mower shop like myself were never perfect; however, they were excellent. Working with them as they improved taught me new ways to show forgiveness, understanding, and patience.

One day the placement officer asked me to interview a young man who was having trouble finding a job. He told me that David was a little shy, did not talk much and was afraid to go on with interviews. He requested that I give David an interview just for practice. He plainly told David that I had no positions open at the time and the interview was just for practice.

When David came in for the interview, he hardly said a word. I told him what we did at the bicycle shop and showed him around. I told David to keep showing up because the number one thing an employer wanted in an associate was dependability.

David was very quiet (he was evaluated as a slow learner in school). Every ten days or so, for weeks after the interview, David walked into the bicycle shop and stood by the front door. He never said a word, just stood by the door.

One day, shortly before Christmas, a large truck came to the shop, packed with 250 new bicycles. It had to be unloaded right away or the driver would leave.

It was raining. Some of my workers (without physical limitations) chose not to brave the weather to get into work, so I was short-handed. It seemed everything was going wrong and on top of it, David came in the front door and just stood there. I looked at him and shouted, “Well, all right! Fill out a time card and help me unload this truck!”

David worked for my bicycle shop for eighteen years. He came to work every day thirty minutes early. He could talk; however, he rarely chose to. He drove my truck and made deliveries. The customers would praise David, saying, “He doesn’t talk, but he really shows you how to operate a lawn mower!”

【1】The author finally hired David because________.

A. there were no other workers in the shop then

B. he needed someone who was willing to work then

C. David kept showing up

D. he realized David was dependable

【2】We can infer from the last paragraph that_______.

A. the author feels lucky to hire David

B. David has had his character changed through work

C. the author prefers David to be more outgoing

D. some customers just play jokes on David

【3】The author gave David an interview to _______.

A. find a person who is reliable

B. find a part-time worker in need

C. give him some practice

D. show sympathy for him

【4】The author’s tone in describing David is full of ______.

A. pity B. wonder

C. disappointment D. appreciation
