3.Somewhere on the other side of the world,a small group of workers is busy with a life-or-death struggle. This battle isn't about self-protection,as admirable as that might be. By slaying to face the radiation and Fire at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station following the earthquake and then tsunami(海嘯)in Japan, the 50 or so workers may have already shortened their life. They knew that would happen.
And yet they stay, working in near-total darkness, pumping seawater onto exposed nuclear fuel in hopes that they can prevent thousands of tons of radioactive material going into the air,and protect the health of millions of people.
Their task sounds like something out of a sci-fi thriller. They worked on the equipment in the complete darkness only by their flashlights, listening for explosions. They carry heavy oxygen tanks on their backs. They wear white,full-body jump suits to protect their bodies.Like Oscar said in"Armageddon":"Scariest environment imaginable. That's all you have to say."
According to news reports, some of the 50 workers volunteered to remain behind to take charge of the fire pumps with which they're spraying seawater on the exposed fuel. It's part of the job, part of the training,"an American nuclear power plant operator said."Nobody makes a secret of the possible dangers at a place like this.If there's a problem, you don't call somebody in to fix it.It's our problem. We're the only ones who can fix it.That's just what we do."
I don't know about you,but I've never really thought of nuclear power plant workers as"guardians at the gate"-those whose jobs may at any time place them in a position to protect us,perhaps at the risk of their own lives.
These are obviously guardians at the gate.In every case they're trained to respond to unknown possibilities. For them,it isn't a matter of courage-it's standard operating procedure.

Scariest environment imaginable. That's all you have to say."也是為了說明其工作環(huán)境的惡劣性.故選B.
63.D作者觀點(diǎn)題.根據(jù)第四段some of the 50 workers volunteered to remain behind to take charge of the fire pumps with which they're spraying seawater on the exposed fuel. It's part of the job, part of the training,可知這些工人是自愿的;而根據(jù)最后一段,這些工人不僅表現(xiàn)出他們的勇敢,同時(shí)這也是他們的職責(zé).故選D.
64.A詞意判斷題.根據(jù)第五段I don't know about you,but I've never really thought of nuclear power plant workers as"guardians at the gate"可知"I"指作者,而此處的"you"應(yīng)該是指這50名工人.故選A.

11.How was it that an American ship came to be sunk by American mines in a port held by American forces?
Built in1931,the luxury liner SS President Coolidge was a 10-year veteran(退伍軍人) of the Pacific before she was pressed into service by the military and converted to carry troops.
On October 26,1942,towards the end of her first year of World War II service,the Coolidge hit an American mine in the east entrance of the Segond Channel on Espiritu Santo,one of the islands of the New Herbrides(now Vanuatu),and sank in 36meters of water.
Though all but two of the 5000officers and men aboard were saved,the loss of the ship was a military scandal.She had escaped the Japanese during the worst part of the war in the Pacific,only to be lost because of a series of disastrous American mistakes.
The master of the Coolidge,Henry Nelson,claimed he hadn't been warned that the harbor was mined.Worse,in terms of wartime security,neither of the two US destroyers the Coolidge had encountered had challenged her.Nor had they relayed the vital information about the mines."The first warning was from a signal station further in the harbor telling me to stop,that we were approaching danger,"he wrote.
‘I,in turn,stopped the engines and backed the engines,but with the speed we were moving,we still went too far and we struck two mines.I immediately,with the speed we had left,headed the ship to the beach,and ordered"abandon ship",which was done and completed in 45minutes.'‘No one mentioned to me,no one informed me,that there was a mine field in Espiritu Santo.Had there been some knowledge of mines,I never would have approached anywhere visible.'
Captain Nelson was exonerated(免罪) by a court of inquiry but those responsible did not escape blame.The port director's office at Noumea and the inefficiency of an experienced commanding officer of a navy patrol(巡邏隊(duì)) and pilot boat were blamed.
Today,the Coolidge is one of the world's best wreck dives.Much of her original luxury decoration remains,including The Lady,perhaps the most photographed underwater icon in the world.Military equipment she was transporting can also still be seen.

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

12.Many people have low iron in their blood.But pregnant women need extra iron for their own health and their baby's health.Iron is important to the development of a baby's brain and central nervous system.
In poor countries,however,providing all pregnant women with iron supplements (補(bǔ)品 ) can be a financial issue.Some experts say giving supplements to babies after they are born is enough.
Someone who disagrees is Parul Christian,a nutritionist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland.She and other scientists have been doing research in Nepal.She says their latest findings should settle any question about the value of making sure every pregnant woman receivesiron supplements.
Iron is a micronutrient (微營養(yǎng)素).Micronutrients are important substances that are found in small amounts in foods.
The researchers first completed a study among poor women in Nepal ten years ago.During pregnancy some of the women received supplements containing iron and another micronutrient, folic acid.
Professor Christian says that study showed the supplements could improve child survival.
Now the children are older.The researchers returned to Nepal and tested their neurological (神經(jīng)的)development.They found improved intellectual(智力的) and fine motor abilities among those whose mothers had received iron and folic acid during pregnancy and for three months after.
The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Another new study,published in the journal Pediatrics,looks at levels of vitamin D in babies.It says newborns with the lowest levels were twice as likely to develop respiratory infections(呼吸道感染) as those with normal levels of vitamin D.
Vitamin D helps build strong bones and strengthens the body's defenses against disease.The vitamin is commonly added to cow's milk and also found in supplements.But vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin.The body naturally produces it from sunlight.
Carlos Camargo from Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts and other researchers did the study.It followed more than nine hundred children in New Zealand until they were five years old.

A.iron            B.folic acid      C.vitamin D      D.supplements

C.a(chǎn)ll the vitamins that you need to keep healthy can be received from the sunlight
D.it's more possible for babies lacking vitamin D to suffer from respiratory infections
