【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫(xiě),使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。

A knock at the front door announced a visitor. Phil Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10, head down and face hidden, nose sniffling(抽鼻子), obviously in some unhappiness.

Phil and his wife Molly lived in this neighbourhood for almost three decades. The families here all knew and trusted one another. Youngsters bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment. In the school holidays, Molly and Phil had been known to take children at a time to the local cinema to give some of the parents a break.

Having taken him to the living room and had him seated, Phil asked the boy, “Philip, what’s happened?”

The boy seemed genuinely upset by the inquiry. “Sorry, Mr. Radcliffe,” he sobbed, “My dad’s just left home. He’s not going to live with us anymore. Mum’s crying. It’s made me cry. I don’t think I’m going to see him again.”

Phil sat down next to him and put a comforting arm around his shoulders, trying to reassure the youngster, “I’m sure that you’ll see your father again very soon, Philip. You’re a lovely boy and he’ll want to see you a lot. And your teachers will understand if sometimes you’re a bit sad.”

The boy wiped away his tears with the back of a hand.

“Let me get something for us,” Phil suggested. He went into the kitchen, and then returned with an orange juice for the boy, a coffee for himself and a selection of biscuits for them. However upset he might have been, young Philip was obviously happy with the drink and concentrated on the chocolate samples among the biscuits.

Once the boy seemed more settled, Phil proposed, “Perhaps you should call your mum and tell her where you are, so that she doesn’t worry.”

“It’s OK, Mr. Radcliffe,” he insisted. “I’ll go home in a few minutes. But I like talking to you.”

“You can stay as long as you want, Philip. I just don’t want your mother to think that she’s lost you.”

Paragraph 2:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【答案】Paragraph 1:

The response surprised and troubled Philip. He asked Phil if he would lose her one day. He was worried about she would die and he would be without her. Phil comforted him, “Philip, please don’t worry about your mother. She’s still young and she’ll be with you. Of course, one day, she will diebut we all die. When that happens, you’ll be a different person, an older person. It will be hard but you’ll manage it successfully—believe me.”

Paragraph 2:

On the doorstep, young Philip looked up at his friendly neighbour. “Thank you very much, Mr. Radcliffe. I feel a bit better now. Can I call again sometime?” “Of course,” Phil promised. “Come and talk whenever you like. Molly and I love seeing you and your friends.” The boy then said very quietly, “But you might be out. Or you might move away.” Phil cast a kind look at the boy, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, and assured him, “Don’t worry. Whenever you want me, I’ll be there. Whatever happens, I promise you that I’ll be your friend as long as you trust me.”

【題目】 Do you remember your first day of school? Were you excited or a bit scared? When I started school, I lived in an area of southern Germany. I remember how frightened I was, mostly because I didn’t know what to expect.

My mother and I walked quietly, downhill into the center of town. When we entered the classroom, I noticed all the children were sitting quietly in their seats. Anxiously, I picked a spot next to a friendly-looking girl.

In my nervousness, I had totally forgotten I was to receive a Schultuete (school cone) on the first day of school, but as I looked at my teacher's desk I remembered. Her desk was covered with huge cardboard cones. I knew that my mother had filled my Schultuete with goodies and brought it to my classroom the day before, but I didn't know which one was mine.

That morning, the focus of my attention remained with those cones. All of the fear slowly disappeared. When the teacher asked me to approach the desk, she did not seem threatening at all. When she smilingly handed me my Schultuete, I was the happiest girl.

Proudly, I carried my gift home. The hill did not seem steep at all. Hurriedly, I unwrapped my Schultuete and discovered candies, chocolates, and oranges. This day stayed in my mind as one of the sweetest in my life.

When I was older I asked my mother about her first day of school. She told me she hadn't received a Schultuete from her parents because the custom had not been established all over Germany at that time.

The custom began in the cities in the 1800s and then spread to the towns and villages. By the early 1950s, the tradition of the Schultuete was established all over the country. And it has been passed on even in the present day.

1How did the author feel at first about her first day of school?

A.ExcitedB.Confused

C.AfraidD.Delighted

2According to the text, a Schultuete _____.

A.is given to kids as a gift on their first day of school

B.is presented as a reward by a school teacher

C.became popular in the early 19th century

D.is usually filled with school supplies

3The underlined sentence “The hill did not seem steep at all” implies that ____.

A.the author was in good healthB.the author was very excited then

C.the author enjoyed climbing hillsD.the author missed her mother badly

【題目】 Tiny microbes (微生物) are at the heart of a new agricultural technique to manage harmful greenhouse gas. Scientists have discovered how microbes can be used to turn carbon dioxide into soil-enriching limestone (石灰石), with the help of a type of tree that grows in tropical areas, such as West Africa.

Researchers have found that when the Iroko tree is grown in dry, acidic soil and treated with a combination of natural fungi (霉菌) and other bacteria, not only does the tree grow well, it also produces the mineral limestone in the soil around its root.

The Iroko tree makes a mineral by combining Ca from the earth with CO2 from the atmosphere. The bacteria then create the conditions under which this mineral turns into limestone. The discovery offers a new way to lock carbon into the soil, keeping it out of the atmosphere. In addition to storing carbon in the trees' leaves and in the form of limestone, the mineral in the soil makes it more suitable for agriculture.

The discovery could lead to reforestation projects in tropical countries, and help reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the developing world. It has already been used in West Africa and is being tested in Bolivia, Haiti and India.

The findings were made in a three-year project involving researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh, Granada, Lausanne and Delft University of Technology. The project examined several microbiological methods of locking CO2 as limestone, and the Iroko-bacteria way showed best results. Work was funded by the European Commission under the Future&Emerging Technologies(FET)scheme.

Dr Bryne Ngwenya of the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences, who led the research, said"By taking advantage of this natural limestone-producing process, we have a low-tech, safe, readily employed and easily operating way to lock carbon out of the atmosphere, while improving farming conditions in tropical countries."

1The passage is mainly introducing ______ .

A.some useful natural fungi and bacteria

B.the soil-enriching limestone created by scientists

C.a newly-found tree in West Africa

D.a new way to deal with greenhouse gas

2Which of the following is True about tiny microbes?

A.Tiny microbes get along well with the Iroko tree in special soil.

B.CO2 can be broken down by natural fungi and bacteria.

C.The more greenhouse gas is, the more active tiny microbes become.

D.Most tiny microbes like living in dry, acidic soil.

3What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 3 probably refer to?

A.Carbon dioxide.B.Soil.

C.Carbon.D.Limestone.

4According to the passage, what can we infer?

A.The action of the tiny microbes can increase the oxygen in the earth.

B.Researchers tend to use natural power to solve their problem.

C.Researchers have done the experiment on trees in Africa for three years.

D.West Africa is one of the most polluted areas all over the world.
