【題目】By 1938, Europe had been experiencing an increased number of attacks on Jews. With no end in sight, Jewish refugee(難民) agencies requested the British government to allow them to bring in only Jewish children under 17 years of age. This was to be only temporary, until the situation in their home countries was improved.
Kindertransport, meaning “children transport” in German, was then born. Children from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland and other Nazi-occupied regions were transported to the United Kingdom. There they were either placed with other families or in hostels. Later, it was found that many of these children were the only survivors of their families. Nicholas Winton was among those people who helped to save Jewish children. He managed to rescue 669 children from Czechoslovakia and bring them safely to England. In 1938 around Christmas, 29-year-old Nicky was about to leave for a skiing holiday. Suddenly, Martin Blake, one of his good friends, contacted (聯(lián)絡(luò)) him from Czechoslovakia, asking him to travel there to help political refugees on the run from the Nazis. And Nicholas agreed.
Nicky spent his entire holiday of 3 weeks in the capital city of Prague where he saw the situation first-hand. Once back in England, he immediately started organizing the evacuation(撤離) of children from the Czech region. From advertising for the necessary permits, Nicky worked tirelessly. By August 1939, 669 children had been helped by Nicky and his friends. Haplessly, the last group of children due to leave Prague in the beginning of September could not do so— World War Ⅱ broke out, and swallowed them up.
Nicky did not discuss his particular task with his wife, Grete. It was only when she found a scrapbook in 1988, with names of the rescued children, their (lost) parents and the foster families that had taken them in, that his heroism came to light. Nicky has received several awards in Britain and the Czech Republic.

Every spring Beijing is choked by huge sandstorms. The sky turns a strange and frightening yellow colour as clouds of sand sweep down from the deserts of Mongolia and north-western China.Strong winds blow up the dust and cover everything in sight—in 2006,a storm dumped 330,000 tonnes of dust on Beijing in one night.
The number of sandstorms has grown alarmingly over the years as the deserts have expanded. This is partly man-made and partly because of climate(氣候).Many grasslands have been overgrazed(過(guò)度放牧)by sheep and goats,or ploughed up,leaving the soil dangerously exposed.Too much water has been taken out of rivers, and the situation is made worse by increasingly long-lasting droughts that have affected the northern half of China as the climate grows warmer and drier. The result is probably the worst loss of rich land to deserts in the world and a dust bowl of extremely large proportions. The nearest sand dunes to Beijing are now only 70 km away and drifting closer each year.At this rate, the desert will reach the city by 2040,and Beijing could become the world’s first modern city to disappear under sand.To hold back the deserts,a huge programme of forest planting called the Great Green Wall has been under way for over 30 years. The barrier(隔離帶)is planned to be 4,500 km long when completed in several decades(十年),but the drought is having a very bad effect on the trees and the deserts carry on growing.
【1】All the following are the reasons for the expansion of the deserts EXCEPT .
A.the soil of the grasslands is exposed
B.too much span>water in rivers has been used

A.More than 15 km a year.
B.More than 2 km a month.
C.More than 2 km a year.
D.More than 15 km a month.
【3】What is the purpose of the huge programme“the Great Green Wall”?
A.To protect the Great Wall.
B.To plant as many trees as possible along the Great Wall.
C.To stop the deserts from moving towards Beijing.
D.To plant as many trees as possible in Beijing.
【4】In which section can this passage most likely be found in a newspaper?
