7.Relations between the United States and Spain were not very good in 1898.On February 15,a battleship called the USS Maine blew up and sank in the harbor at Havana,Cuba.More than 260Americans were killed.Many Americans thought that Spanish saboteurs (破壞者) had set an underwater mine that caused the explosion.
Witnesses and survivors had different versions of what happened.Some said that they heard two explosions.It was discovered that the magazine-which is a storage place for arms,ammunition(軍火),and explosives-had exploded.Questions were raised about what caused the first explosion.Did the first explosion come from outside the ship,causing the magazine to explode?Or,did something on the ship blow up the magazine?
Other witnesses said that there was only one explosion.If they are right,then what on the ship caused the magazine to explode?A theory supporting the two-explosion version was that rebels from Cuba had caused the explosion.The rebels were aware of the bad feelings between the United States and Spain.They would have been willing to cause trouble between the nations to bring an end to Spanish rule in Cuba.
The United States government issued an ultimatum(最后通牒) to the Spanish government to end its occupation of Cuba.When Spanish officials refused,Congress and President William McKinley declared war on Spain.The war did not last long,because the United Sates forced an early surrender.
More than 100years after the explosion of Maine,the cause of the explosion is still unknown.Many questions remain.If an attack from outside the ship caused the magazine to explode,why didn't witnesses see a splash in the water?Why were there no dead fish in the water if there was an external explosion?
With the mystery still unsolved, the question of what really happened to the USS Maine may never be answered.

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)

分析 本文介紹了導(dǎo)致 the USS Maine 爆炸的可能性的原因.

解答 81.the explosion and sinking of the USS Maine  細(xì)節(jié)理解題.第一段"a battleship called the USS Maine blew up and sank in the harbor at Havana,Cuba.More than 260Americans were killed"這句話可得出答案.
82.store arms,ammunition,and explosives 細(xì)節(jié)理解題.在第二段"It was discovered that the magazine-which is a storage place for arms,ammunition(軍火),and explosives-had exploded"可以得出當(dāng)時(shí)magazine是用來存儲(chǔ)軍火等的地方.
83.To cause trouble and end the Spanish rule/occupation.根據(jù)第三段"A theory supporting the two-explosion version was that rebels from Cuba had caused the explosion"這句話告訴我們Cuban rebels 引起爆炸的目的.
84.The Mystery of the USS Maine./The (possible) causes of the USS Maine's Explosion通過全文以及最后一段的介紹可知,這篇文章的主要目的就是介紹了USS Maine's Explosion可能的原因.

10.At one time it was the dream of many little girls to become a nurse.Today,however,America is facing its worst nurse shortage since World War I.Recently about 2,000,000nurses are needed and 60percent of all hospitals in the US have shortages large enough to threaten the quality of care provided.The demand for nurses spreads widely throughout the nursing field.
What has become of these women in white?The answer lies in not one but several causes.One possibility is the fact that women have greater career options(職業(yè)選擇).In the past,women who chose to work outside the home had two basic choices:nursing or teaching.Today,more women than ever are in the work force,but their options have greatly increased.There are women doctors,lawyers,firefighters and police officers.In fact,women today are found in nearly every field of work.Nursing has been left behind,as women move on to jobs with higher pay and greater status(地位).A woman or man in the nursing field is often looked down upon as"merely a nurse".Teachers may be also at fault.Many high school students are actually being persuaded to keep away from nursing,told by teachers that they are"too bright to be a nurse".

5.What are the main factors that are responsible for the shortage of nurses in America?C

Robert Frost was no longer young when he published his first book of poems,A Boy's Will,in 1913.Though born in San Francisco,the USA,he came from a New England family which returned there when he was ten.Like many other writers,he had a brief brush with college and then supported himself by trying different jobs.However,he had been brought up on a farm and he liked farming.Most of all,he liked to write but he could not support himself by writing.In his late 30s he moved to England,where he produced his first book.
At the outbreak of World War I,F(xiàn)rost went back to farming in New Hampshire.From then on,although he made many journeys elsewhere,he considered the farm to be his home and farming activities became the focus of his poetry.
Frost's verses(詩,詩體) are a part of a great tradition,shaped by the Roman poet Vergil,whose poetry was mainly about farming.However,though he used farm situations in much of his poetry,he gave them a wide application.He might write about stepping on a rake(耙子) and describe the feeling when it hit him,but he used the incident to show how life gave us lessons.
Some talents in poetry are used up early,but not Frost's.He continued to publish fine poetry for fifty years.He reached the height of his popularity after World War II.If America had a national poet in the 20th century,it was Frost.He was chosen to read one of his poems at the inauguration(就職典禮)of the late President John F.Kennedy,the first poet ever so honored.

12.Some of the most popular programmes on British television, all with their regular millions of loyal viewers, are‘soaps'such as Coronation Street,Eastenders and Emmerdale.(A‘soap'is an informal word for a‘soap opera',which is a television story,in daily or weekly episodes (連續(xù)劇集),about the daily lives of the characters in it.)
In every soap there is comedy and tragedy, and storylines of all kinds. In every soap there is the inevitable gossip, and there is the essential character who brings misfortune on himself-or herself, the spiteful woman who hates the success of her sister in marrying a man with money and whose childish behavior splits the family.
To some degree,of course, the regular episodes provide many people with an adult kind of comic, rather like Dickens'serialized novels did.At times, the actions and characters in them seem quite realistic; at other times, they go to the other extreme and show actions that look as if they are straight from the pen of the best fiction writers. But perhaps the fall into clearly fictional comedy or tragedy is necessary to remind regular viewers that their daily amount of‘soap'is no more and no less than a shot of fiction, and that the characters are not real.
Certainly life is never dull in a soap.If one of the adolescents buys a motorbike and a young child lives round the corner, you can bet the two will meet in an accident. If two people fall in love and get married, you can be sure that a friend will cast an insult on the character of one of them, enough to break up the marriage. After all, this is not life; this is a soap!Reality makes way for fiction. The viewers who think that they are watching even a reflection of reality only bring disappointment to themselves. But there are still viewers who follow the comings and goings of the characters on screen with unreasoning faith, believing that the events are real when characters are injured or ill,or even die,and send cards or flowers with best wishes, congratulations or sympathies.
What many of us find difficult to understand is just why soaps have become so popular?

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)

76.
Start with an idea. This doesn't have to be a brand new invention or new product. In fact, many successful small businesses have found a way to deliver an existing service more efficiently or economically or have customized an existing product or service.Evaluate your competitors-how many competitors, how strong are they, where are they, how will you compete.State what is required to enter this market, barriers to entry such as high fixed costs (factories, restaurants) and government regulations that must be met.E
77.
This doesn't mean build a big factory or a fancy office. It simply means keep accurate customer records,a clean set of updated books and a technology foundation,if necessary. One of the downfalls of many small businesses is that they don't know if they're making or losing money (i.e.the need for a clean set of books).Another downfall is when small business owners try to sell their company years later but lack accurate customer history and customer information.B
78.
Once you know you can be profitable take the leap and get started.Besides getting business supplies or advertising, plan ahead by establishing some new business clients ahead of time.If your business is unlike a restaurant, that physically needs to wait for customers to walk into its doors, establish accounts ahead of time.In this way,you will have pre-planned future receivables to look forward to.D
79.
Use every technology available that will give your business a competitive advantage. The internet is a customers'research tool.Help future customers learn more about you and the details about what you sell and why your products or services are different and better for them than other competitors.A

Carrying cash can be risky. Therefore, most people choose to carry Visa,Mastercard,American Express and Discover. All these credit cards are part of our everyday life when it comes to making purchases.Debit cards are especially popular. So,along with having a sales counter cash register, get set up to accept credit cards for your business. To do this, also purchase a new credit machine.C.
