【題目】O. Henry was a pen name used by an American writer of short stories. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

As a young boy he lived an exciting life. He did not go to school for very long, but he managed to teach himself everything he needed to know. When he was about 20 years old, O. Henry went to Texas, where he tried different jobs. He first worked on a newspaper, and then had a job in a bank, when some money went missing from the bank, O. Henry was believed to have stolen it. Because of that, he was sent to prison. During the three years in prison, he learned to write short stories.

After he got out of prison, he went to New York in 1902 when Porter's most prolific(多產(chǎn)的)writing period started. While there, he wrote 381 short stories. He wrote a story a week for over a year for the New York World Sunday Magazine. He wrote mostly about New York and the life of the poor there. People liked his stories, because simple as the tales were, they would finish with a sudden change at the end, to the reader’s surprise.

Porter traveled with Richard to Austin in 1884, where he met Athol Estes, then seventeen years old and from a wealthy family. On July 1, 1887, Porter married Athol. Athol Estes Porter died on July 25, 1897, from tuberculosis. Porter married again in 1907, to childhood sweetheart Sarah (Sallie) Lindsey Coleman, whom he met again after revisiting his native state of North Carolina.

Porter was a heavy drinker, and his health deteriorated(惡化) markedly in 1908, which affected his writing. In 1909, Sarah left him, and he died on June 5, 1910, of cirrhosis of the liver, complications of diabetes, and an enlarged heart. After funeral services in New York City, he was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina.

【題目】What looks like an angry old man and lives at the bottom of the ocean? Its the worlds ugliest animal---the blobfish(水滴魚).

Its strange skin is shaped by its habitat. It lives 800 meters below the oceans surface, a depth where very few other creatures can survive.

Most fishes have a swim bladder(魚鰾), which is filled with gas and helps them stay afloat. At the depth that the blobfish live, water pressure is 80 times higher than that at higher sea levels and any swim bladder wouldnt be able to serve its purpose.

The blobfish don’t have a swim bladder because their skin works the same way. It helps them stay afloat without having to use any energy.

The blobfish have a pretty relaxed attitude towards eating. All they do is stay and wait for crabs or lobsters to come by.

Since the blobfish like to eat crabs and lobsters, they often get caught in nets that are used to catch lobsters or crabs and end up dying or being killed. They are not suitable for eating so they are useless for fishermen.

Theres a purpose behind the blobfishs new title; it has become the new mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, an organization whose purpose is to preserve endangered ugly animals.

Weve needed an ugly face for endangered ugly animals for a long time and Ive been amazed by the public reaction, said the Societys Simon Watt. For too long cute animals have taken the limelight(風(fēng)頭) but now the blobfish will be a voice for those who always get forgotten. They hope this new face will help the world know that we need to help preserve the populations of ugly animals too.

How to Build Your Own Website

Sixty years ago, people asked about your astrological (星座) sign.1These days, having a web address is almost as important as a street address. Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.

2Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.

While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout (編排).3Next comes a greeting and a short description of the site. Pictures, texts; and links to other websites follow.

Before you start building your site, do some planning. Think about whom the site is for and what you want to say.4

Draw a rough layout on a sheet of paper.

While there are no rules you have to follow, there are a few things to keep in mind:

5If you aim too high at the beginning, you may never get the site off the ground. You can always add something new to your site.

◆Less is better. Most people don’t like to read a lot of texts online. Break it into small pieces.

◆Smaller is better. Since it takes a long time to download large picture files, keep the file sizes small.

Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start building. Learning the net communities helps provide tools to help you build your site.

A. Start simply.

B. A personal website is not usual today.

C. Nowadays, they want to know your website.

D. Pay attention to the contents of your website.

E. At the top of the page is a banner (橫幅) GRAPHIC.

F. Next, gather up the material you want to put on the site.

G. Think of your home page as the starting point of your website.

【題目】How to Improve Vocabulary Fast

Your vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it.

Read every day. 1 Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know.

Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how yourcat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow.4But the more you use it, the more fluent you will become in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary.

Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary. Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is5.The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it.
